When you set your clocks back, let it remind you to tackle these to-dos.
As the mornings get darker and colder, all of us are waiting for the opportunity to “fall back” and get another hour of sunlight earlier in the day. The good news is that it’s just around the corner!
When you set your clocks back, let it serve as a reminder to take on a few other tasks around the house. Changing the clocks is the perfect time to make these other semiannual changes!
- Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors while you’re moving your hour hands around your house. While you’re at it, replace their batteries with a fresh pair that you’ve pre-tested in another device. Then put the “old” batteries into other devices that won’t threaten your life when they run out of juice.
- Switch the direction of your ceiling fan to make your home more comfortable and lower your heating/cooling costs. In the fall and winter, your fans should move clockwise to force warm air down. In the spring and summer, rotate them counterclockwise to pull warm air up while pushing cold air down.
- Make sure your home is protected against both physical and digital risks by updating your home inventory and your malware/virus protection software.
- Take a moment to evaluate your plumbing. Check the pipes you don’t often see—those under the sink, behind the washer, and in the basement—for any leaks you may not have noticed. If you do find them, don’t wait to repair them!
